Derrick Don Divin

Derrick Don Divin Irambona, a rising star in the Rwandan music scene, has not only made a name for himself by producing original music but also by preserving the rich cultural heritage of the country through his covers of traditional Rwandan songs known as “karahanyuze.”
His journey from being a DJ to opening his own music studio, Don Legacy, has been a testament to his dedication and passion for music.
Collaboration has been a key aspect of Derrick’s musical career, and he has worked closely with Alviz Organ, a talented director from Alviz Pictures, to create visually stunning music videos that complement his songs.
Through these collaborations, Derrick has had the opportunity to work with various artists from different parts of the world, such as Marius Bison, D Poly, Jouese from Canada, Denise from the USA, and Christian from Dubai, among others.
These collaborations have not only expanded his musical horizons but also allowed him to create unique fusions of styles and cultures.
Derrick’s musical journey began as a DJ, where he honed his skills by entertaining crowds in different high schools, including TTC Save and Byimana School of Sciences. It was during this time that he discovered his true passion for music production. His experience as a DJ provided him with valuable insights into what makes a great song and helped him develop a keen ear for producing high-quality music.
Drawing inspiration from his love for “karahanyuze” songs, Derrick started covering these beautiful compositions, breathing new life into them. He used instruments like the guitar and piano to add his personal touch to classics such as “Gikundiro/Nyamibwa y’Igikundiro” by François Nkurunziza and “Ntacica Nk’irungu” by Canjo Ammis.
His covers quickly gained popularity, resonating with both older generations who cherished the original versions and younger audiences discovering the beauty of these timeless melodies.
Derrick’s passion for music runs in his blood, inherited from his parents who were also singers in their youth. He began writing his own songs in 2008 while still in primary school, and in 2012, he released his first original composition. Music has been a transformative force in his life, allowing him to find his true self and experience boundless joy. It has also brought him genuine friendships and connections that have positively impacted his life. With fans from around the world, Derrick is humbled by the support he receives and finds immense satisfaction in seeing people enjoy his music, turning his dreams into reality.
While music has brought him joy and newfound opportunities, Derrick acknowledges the challenges he faces, particularly the need for sufficient capital to further grow his music career and gain more exposure on TV and radio stations. However, he remains determined to elevate his music by focusing on his original compositions and aspires to release his first album, showcasing his artistic growth and musical evolution.
